This year’s featured acts include Architects of Air, out of Nottingham, UK, an immersive walk-through experience that invites visitors to a world apart from the normal and everyday through labyrinthian tunnels and cavernous domes of saturated color accompanied by a gentle sensory soundscape. The exhibit plays through the entirety of the festival, September 16–October 2 in Ballantyne’s Backyard. When Blumenthal was shut down in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it received a Shuttered Venue Operators Grant (SVOG) from the federal government. Much of that funding went toward the launch of the festival, with the aim of getting people back to work. With SVOG, Blumenthal was able to put more than half a million dollars toward the creative talent behind the festival, from projection artists to theatrical storytellers, dancers, technicians, and more.

(August 26, 2022) Charlotte, NC – Charlotte is less than a month out from the launch of the first ever Charlotte International Arts Festival—or CIAF—the ambitious display of arts and culture that will take over the Queen City for 17 days of discovery, play, and creativity September 16–October 2. Earlier this year, the Leon Levine Foundation pledged $100,000 to support CIAF. This newest pledge marks the foundation’s largest gift to the nonprofit performing arts organization to date. Several of last year’s most popular attractions will return, including a large-scale installation by Moradavaga, a collaborative of Italian and Portuguese architects. They’ll feature Lotty, a giant interactive squid sculpture complete with acoustic properties. Birdmen, the large-scale animated puppets, also returns with new surprises for children and those young at heart.

Brought us the bunnies; CIAF brings a giant squid in the form of Kraken, whose look was inspired by late 13th-century descriptions of a legendary sea creature that most likely influenced the best-known writings of Herman Melville and Jules Verne. The free immersive, interactive art installation inspires play from visitors of all ages. The final weekend of CIAF, hurricane weather hit Charlotte; Blumenthal’s staff worked quickly to reschedule performances and pivot outdoor events inside at SouthPark Mall. In its second year, CIAF features dozens of local, national and international artists, musicians and performers, along with food from across the globe, at more than 200 attractions (many free) across multiple sites in uptown and Ballantyne from Sept. 15 through Oct. 1. Fun for everyone, from families to individuals, we invite you to participate in imaginative arts’ experiences throughout our city over the course of 17 days. We invite you to stay awhile, play, and welcome curiosity, as we begin to see our city through new eyes. CHARLOTTE — Blumenthal Performing Arts is set to bring its annual celebration of visual and performing arts to venues across Charlotte from Sept. 15 – Oct. 1. This year, the festival is also partnering with Festival of India for an event at Belk Theater on Sept. 23 with Indian dance, food, art and music, as well as the Latin American Festival for an “interactive village” with a marketplace, performances, food and music the same day at Ballantyne’s Backyard.

He will be snapping and distributing pictures to visitors at Ballantyne’s Backyard during the festival. The 2023 Charlotte International Arts Festival (CIAF) will feature more than 200 events across multiple genres with most being free and open to the public and ticketed events starting at $5. Events will be held in different venues in Uptown and Ballantyne’s Backyard. Visitors to uptown Charlotte will get to walk beneath a ceiling of iridescent bubbles on Levine Avenue, where they can also play chess with friends or strangers, and sip beer in an outdoor biergarten — open at 3 p.m.

In addition to location accessibility, CIAF’s programming was largely free and open to the public, with ticketed events starting at $5, making the arts accessible to all facets of the community, many of whom may not have had access to the arts to this degree before. The inaugural arts festival presented a variety of acts representing more than 10 countries with more than 200 events across the city. With many events and installations occurring in Ballantyne’s Backyard, CIAF also marked the first time Blumenthal Performing Arts extended a large swath of its programming 20 miles outside of Uptown, making CIAF events more accessible to a larger audience. CIAF’s contribution to Charlotte’s arts ecosystem goes beyond bringing the community a joyful two-week celebration. Each artist is compensated for their work, and their art is expected to be experienced by tens of thousands of people. In this spirit of collaboration, Charlotte’s long-running Festival of India and the Latin American Festival have joined CIAF as partners and will hold their festivals under the CIAF umbrella.

Boris “Bluz” Rogers, director of creative engagement at Blumenthal Performing Arts, is excited about so many things that the competition brings to Charlotte. Two popular festivals — Festival of India and the Latin American Festival — will be part of CIAF. The events will be in various locations in Uptown Charlotte and Ballantyne. Guests can also make crafts, climb a rock wall, skate in an outdoor roller rink, dance along a glowing, light-up path reminiscent of a board game like Candyland, and encounter 100 tiny, smile-provoking art pieces on a nature trail.

Visitors will get to see a giant sea squid, circus performers, big inflatable pillow people, giant airheads (not the candy), and interact with larger-than-life bird puppets, which proved a hit during the festival's launch in 2022. For the full festival lineup, keep an eye on charlotteartsfest.com and @cltartsfest for the most up-to-date information. Each selected artist will receive a 60-minute time slot for performing outdoors in either Uptown Charlotte or Ballantyne. Each selected artist or group will receive a stipend of $1,000 for a full-length performance or $250 for a pop-up performance. Wilson’s exhibit Heart and Sole CLT preserves the city’s soul and history and combines it with the present by using the Air Jordan 1 High OG — the iconic shoe of one of the city’s most famous residents, Michael Jordan — as the canvas. The exhibit will be on display at The Brooklyn Collective throughout the festival’s run.

Additionally, artists are needed to paint corn hole boards, picnic tables, and more for the CIAF Biergarten. Artists should visit the website for more information or to submit applications. Jain is one of nine local artists selected as a 2023 Blumenthal Fellow and awarded grants for their work by Blumenthal Performing Arts (BPA), the festival’s organizer and producer. BPA awarded $85,000 to this year’s fellows as part of its mission for the festival to bring together local and global artists in a cultural celebration.

Limewash on Brick: A Step-by-Step Guide Limewash Paint

limewash brick house

Another advantage of limewash brick is how low-maintenance it is. It’s astonishing to learn that when you pick limewash brick, you won’t have to do any maintenance at all. Because brick has the best porous surface, the paint will never have difficulty sinking into it.

Spray the Brick with Water

Suppose you have an old house that is full of memories but in need of a paint job, consider getting a limewash instead. A paint job might protect it from the outside, but it will do nothing for the water damage the house has already sustained. Instead, the limewash will allow the bricks and wood to breathe and get rid of the moisture. A brand-new paint job can be a costly affair, especially for large ranch houses. However, there is a solution around it, a way to change the look of your house without going bankrupt.

Benefits of Using Sustainable Materials in Home Construction

Limewash paint has been around since roman times so it stands the test of time. This helped me make the biggest mistakes in areas that no one really will see. By the time I worked on the front, I finally a good technique down.

THEN, I tried taking a tiny brush and applying it in the grout

Plus, I have leftovers for touchups in the future, if needed. "Let nature take its toll. It will wear over time, which is really the whole goal of limewashing!" Kunh says. Below is a quick little video I shot as I was applying the wash so you can see first-hand how easy this is. And although only the front facade of our house is brick, we barely made a dent in the bag.

Step 4: Prepare Your Limewash Mixture:

He also recommends applying the limewash in thin layers to build coverage versus applying a thick coat all at once. This allows for more finesse and control over the finished look as you work. If desired, you can apply a second coat working to your desired opaqueness. You can mix batches as needed, but you run the risk of one batch being more opaque or transparent than the next. Since our house is small and only the front is brick, I didn’t think I’d need more than one small batch. Not only does it make lime washing large spaces a simple process, but it’s also so soft!

RECAP: Exterior Brick Limewash Technique Step-by-Step:

Limewash bricks have been around for centuries and are used to help old buildings breathe. But it can also turn a modern homestead into a breathtaking piece of art. The protruding structure changes the whole aesthetic of the house into something homely and comfortable.

Limewashing is a great way to project an ordinary paintless house too. If your walls do not have a protective cover, the materials might deteriorate and erode with time and rain. But putting a few coats of limewash will keep the structural timbers from rotting.

There are actually lots of differences between limewash and whitewash. I hope this answered any questions you had about how to limewash a brick home. If you have any additional questions, I am so happy to help. But, you have the option of creating a forced weathered limewash look by rinsing it off in places with water creating a beautiful, instant patina. It will have a different look while it’s wet, but will dry to a lighter, solid finish.

Whitewash is usually made by mixing chalk or lime with paint rather than with water for full coverage. To make the exterior of your home look new and glossy, you will need at least 4 layers of limewash. The mixture is applied on the exposed wall with a dry brush.

We were directed to go to a gate across from our gate. The plane wasn't there yet so we had to wait for it to arrive, then deplane everyone and then wait again for the plane to be cleaned. After 45 minuites we were allowed on the plane.

The first plane had mechanical issues. The 2nd plane must have had bathroom issues because we did not have any food service whatsoever. That made for a long time not to have anything considering that we had just made it to the original gate and we had no time to stop to get food or a drink. Then we didn't want to leave the gate to get food because we wouldn't know how much longer the delay would be. Had we been told that the total time would have been aprox 45 min later we would have left to get food and a beverage.

Three years later, she was picked by the Charlotte Sting in the WNBA draft and played six seasons in the Queen City. She also had one-year stints with Washington Mystics and Indiana Fever. Things looked bleak for the Tar Heels, though, when they got the jump ball trailing Louisiana Tech by 2 and just 0.7 seconds on the clock.

Charlotte Smith (born August 23, 1973)[1] is a retired American professional women's basketball player for the Charlotte Sting, Washington Mystics and Indiana Fever in the WNBA, and for the Colorado Xplosion and San Jose Lasers in the ABL. She is currently the women's basketball head coach at Elon University. Thompson also told her that repeating as NCAA champion will be twice as hard as winning the first time. "Everyone will be gunning for you," said Thompson, whose Wolfpack failed to make the tournament as defending champions his senior year.

Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, 1926 The city’s main library is worth a look even if you’ve no interest in borrowing books. The exterior is an Egyptian and Mediterranean beauty, topped with a dramatic, tiled pyramid tower and decorated with bas-reliefs. The most stunning features, though, reside in the second floor rotunda, with its deco-meets-arabesque dome, California history mural and globe chandelier. High-end department stores have dwindled, Westlake is no longer the lap of luxury and the copper turret on the Bullocks Wilshire has since tarnished green—but none of that diminishes the elegance of this Art Deco landmark. It was a department store built for the car, and even though its cash registers have been shut for two decades (now it’s a law school), its poise and strong vertical lines still catch motorists’ eyes. A palette of whites, deep blues, and gold creates an elegant atmosphere in the formal living room, which was designed by Rachel Duarte. The designer established two seating areas within the space, including a cozy gathering spot with chaise longues that flank the original carved marble fireplace. The room’s coffered ceilings were enhanced with a faux-wood decorative painting by Jhon Ardilla. The designers worked with a color palette of Dunn-Edwards paints, and several chose to highlight the brand’s 2024 Color of the Year, a steely blue called Skipping Stones.

How Many Cruise Ships Have Sunk September Updated 2023

cruise ships that have sunk

In 2015, a Chinese river cruise ship struck an unexpected and violent storm that overturned the boat, marking the last occasion a cruise ship sank with passengers on board. The last time a cruise ship sank with passengers on board was in 2012, when the Costa Concordia ran aground in Italy. The Italian cruise ship struck rocks and eventually capsized, resulting in the loss of 34 lives. The event was also notable for the charges brought against members of the ship’s crew, particularly Captain Francesco Schettino, who is serving a 16-year sentence for manslaughter. Perhaps the most well-known modern day maritime disaster is the partial sinking of the Costa Concordia. The large cruise ship struck a rock off the coast of Isola del Giglio, Italy, during a maneuver close to the island.

Annoying Mistakes I've Made on Cruises

She sank a few hours later in the early morning hours of May 21 while in the Strait of Malacca. Thankfully, all passengers and crew were able to make it off the ship safely. SS Admiral Nakhimov entered service in 1925 as SS Berlin, a passenger liner of the German Weimar Republic.

While being towed to a scrapyard from Brazil, it developed a leak at the back of the ship. With no one on board, the ship was cut free and capsized off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa. On October 26, she was first bombed from above, then sunk by a torpedo launched by German U-Boats on October 28.

Most of the 743 passengers and crew on board escaped in a lifeboat. The ship was not equipped to face bad weather, and the captain and crew were not experienced. Appropriate communication equipment was also missing onboard the vessel. Only 12 lifeboats could be launched out of the several available on board.

The frequency of cruise ship sinkings has decreased due to advances in navigation technology. It’s critical to realize that cruise ship sinkings are quite uncommon. There have only been 22 cruise ship sinkings in the last 100 years. Since 1912, a cruise ship has sunk an average of once every 4.5 years, underscoring how uncommon these incidents are. However, as safety and technology advance and we continue to learn from past tragedies, the number of cruise ship disasters is declining.

When these issues arise, it can have long-term effects on how passengers perceive the industry and their willingness to embark on future voyages. These challenges can range from ensuring the proper maintenance of safety equipment to adhering to environmental regulations. Some common compliance challenges include the proper training of crew members, implementing proper emergency procedures, and ensuring the ship’s infrastructure is up to code. With these comprehensive safety measures in place, you can feel confident that the cruise industry is prioritizing your well-being and taking significant steps to protect you. Only one carnival cruise ship has sunk in history, the Costa Concordia.

Carnival Cruise Line guide: Everything to know about ships, itineraries and more

The ship sails around the Bahamas, Caribbean, and more on two to 10-day itineraries. For digs that include pampering, try a Cloud 9 Spa cabin to receive extras like complimentary thermal suite access and two free yoga or Pilates classes. People on Carnival cruise ships hail primarily from the United States, mainly the south and Midwest, but you'll also meet folks from Canada, England and usually a handful of other European countries. If you're sure Carnival is your line, look for a travel agent who specializes in trips with the brand. You want someone who understands all the little quirks that are unique to Carnival's cabin categories and, preferably, has done ship inspections to see the cabins firsthand.

Who goes on Carnival cruise ships?

Through the rest of the decade, the line would continue to sell, or transfer the other 1980s built ships to other lines, with the Jubilee in 2004, Celebration in 2008, and Holiday in 2009. In 2001, the new Panamax size Spirit class debuted with the Carnival Spirit, the first of the four-ship class within the Carnival fleet. Carnival Celebration has gone from the drawing board to the seas!

They typically have one or two big waterslides (sometimes three!), a play zone with interactive water features and a large, continuously filling dump bucket that periodically soaks everybody within range. In fact, when it comes to waterslides on ships, Carnival is the cruise world's king. There's now at least one waterslide on all but one ship in the Carnival fleet (Carnival Luminosa) — something no other line can say. The top decks of Carnival vessels are covered in family-focused attractions – pools, waterslide areas and bustling fun zones with such draws as ropes courses and miniature golf.

The ship has something for every type of traveler, including three kids clubs, adult-only spaces, and over a dozen different dining options. Carnival Conquest takes cruisers to the Bahamas and the Caribbean on two to 10-day sailings. Special programs allow kids to see their favorite Dr. Seuss characters at sea, and adults can enjoy the enticing Alchemy Bar for one-of-a-kind cocktails. The ship debuted the restaurant Cucina del Capitano, which is now onboard multiple ships in the fleet.

Carnival Venezia is ideal if you’re looking for a ship that celebrates one of Italy’s most iconic cities. Venice is the inspiration behind the indoor and outdoor areas, including the atrium, modeled after Piazza San Marco, and the Carnevale Lounge, inspired by Venetian masquerades. Don't miss the Venetian Toast, where the ship’s captain greets guests and crew don Venetian masks. Before committing to a cruise, I break down the price per person per night, particularly if I need multiple cabins because I'm traveling with a group. I recommend you take advantage of Carnival's convenient 24-hour reservation hold, which displays the total cost, itinerary, and a countdown timer so you know when to purchase to secure the locked-in price. The two venues have flat fees of $49 and $24 per person, respectively. For the most part, Carnival ships sail relatively short voyages of three to eight nights. Carnival is one of the world's biggest cruise lines by passenger capacity, with 25 ships that together offer nearly 80,000 berths. Where you won't find Carnival ships, notably, is in Asia, South America or, for the most part, Europe. Unlike other big cruise brands such as Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line and Princess Cruises, Carnival doesn't spread its vessels around the world to draw a fly-in crowd.

It's a place to get together to talk, watch movies, play video games and take part in other activities. Each group has its own age-appropriate activities ranging from face painting to pirate adventures. On many ships there are extensive dedicated spaces for the different groups. On the vast majority of Carnival ships, there's not just a single waterslide but a whole water park area. Dubbed WaterWorks, these areas vary in size and features from vessel to vessel.

You’ll do more than just pass the time as you sail from port to port. Travel Documents and Online Check-In Carnival wants to make boarding your "Fun Ship" cruise as easy as possible. The links below will supply you with important information on the Carnival embarkation process.

Family life is the sweet life, whether on land or at sea… and especially when in a Family Harbor Suite. Your whole crew will enjoy not only the stretch-out space, huge balcony and other perks a suite offers, but a nautical décor specially-designed for Family Harbor staterooms. And while you sail along, the kids and the adults can make use of exclusive access to the nearby Family Harbor Lounge, plus other exclusive perks around the ship. In-room, there’s a full bathroom… plus the convenience of a separate washroom. A private yacht it’s not… but leave the sailing to us — you’d rather be relaxing anyway. We designed Carnival Vista balcony staterooms for maximum sea breeze and the most stunning views, and this stateroom features a balcony that's even wider than our standard balcony.

During those hours, Camp Ocean transforms into a supervised slumber party-type environment with games, movies, crafts and snacks, along with late-night parties called Night Owls. Carnival claims to draw more children than any other cruise line. So perhaps it makes sense that it has one of the most extensive children's programs at sea. The line has formal children's programming and activities for children as young as 2 years old through the age of 17.

But don’t let the numbers fool you; this ship is packed with high-energy activities for all ages; from the kid's clubs to the casino, there’s no lack of fun to be had. Carnival Splendor sails the Southern Hemisphere around Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific on cruises that range from two to 10 days. The ship has Carnival’s only quick-service Indian restaurant and boasts a pool with a retractable roof, so you can swim without worrying about the weather. A great contender for the title of best Carnival ship for singles is Carnival Sunrise. Formerly Carnival Triumph, the ship was completely gutted, overhauled and renamed in 2019.

If you're sure you know what sort of cabin you want, on which ship, on which itinerary — and about a dozen other things — you can head over to Carnival.com to book directly. Note that, in contrast to airline frequent flyer programs, cruise line loyalty programs do not require you to requalify for status every year. However, it's not as difficult as it might at first seem to hit the more rewarding higher-level tiers in just a few years if you're cruising a lot. In fact, the lower tiers of the Carnival program are among the most stingy in the entire cruise universe. You'll receive things like a single complimentary bottle of water (at the Red tier) and a single free drink that only can be ordered on the last night of a cruise (at the Gold tier).

It's not uncommon to find Carnival voyages to the Caribbean, Bahamas or Mexico starting well under $100 per person, per night including all taxes and fees — at least in the offseason. It's a fun-at-sea focus that has gone to new levels over the past two years with the debut of Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration, each of which has — get this — a roller coaster on the top deck. At 800 feet in length, these aren't the biggest roller coasters ever. You'll find at least one of its ships sailing out of pretty much every major port city around the country.

If your cruise departs more than 90 days in the future, you can usually choose to book with only a deposit. After booking, you will receive a confirmation email with your final payment due date and online payment instructions. Generally, these fees increase as you get closer to your departure date. Before booking your cruise, review the cruise line’s change and cancellation policies to understand what fees may apply. Centurion cardmembers get an additional $200 onboard credit on Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn and Silversea.

Additional Information

Impact on your credit may vary, as credit scores are independently determined by credit bureaus based on a number of factors including the financial decisions you make with other financial services organizations. The redemption value of 0.7 cents per point is substantially lower than our average valuation of 2.8 cents each. Due to this low valuation, we recommend saving your points for another redemption and paying cash for your cruise. The cruise must be at least five days long, and you must be traveling with at least double occupancy in your room. Next, you can filter the cruises by duration, departure port and ship. Remember, your cruise must be five nights or longer to get Cruise Privileges Program perks.

Days aboard Princess’s Regal cruise ship can be enjoyed sunning and relaxing on acres of teak-plank decks or at rejuvenating venues like the Sanctuary, an oasis of tranquility. At night, enjoy live music, dancing, dazzling Broadway-style shows and laugh-out-loud comedians. Check out Good Spirits for a refreshing libation inspired by Princess exotic destinations.

A passport is a government-issued ID in the form of a passbook (valid for all international travel) or a passport card (valid only for land or sea travel between the US, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda). If your itinerary includes visits to foreign countries, we recommend you check with your cruise line about which documents are required for entry to the countries you will be visiting. If you don't have the right documents, many countries will deny you entry. If your self-booked flight is delayed, let the cruise line know immediately so that they can make arrangements to get you to the ship. If your flight booked by the cruise line is delayed, let the cruise line know.

American Express offers exclusive benefits when you book a cruise through its AmEx Cruise Privileges program. Please view our advertising policy and product review methodology for more information.

Eligible American Express cardholders receive exclusive perks on participating cruise lines when booking through AmEx Travel. The AmEx Platinum cruise benefits include onboard credits, exclusive amenities and 2x points on the cash portion of your reservation. Eligible purchases are purchases for goods and services minus returns and other credits. See membershiprewards.com/terms for the Membership Rewards program terms and conditions.

You'll earn 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar when you book your cruise through American Express Travel using The Platinum Card from American Express or The Business Platinum Card from American Express. On top of that, you can use online portals and a credit card that earns extra points on your purchase, leading to a great combination of points and rebates on your next cruise booking.

To receive your cruise benefits, follow these steps and ensure your reservation meets the requirements. The shipboard credits are applied to your final bill at the end of your cruise. Once you reach the checkout page, you can redeem American Express Membership Rewards points to book. Since Amex Pay with Points only gives you 0.7 cents per point on cruises and TPG's valuations peg the value of Amex points at 2 cents each, we don't usually recommend redeeming points for your cruise.
